What If the Side Quest Is the Full Monty? Why Following the Prescription for Success Isn't Always the Right Path.

Mar 04, 2026

Everyone told her to build a membership.

She had the credentials. The clinical hours. The depth of training. The business advice she was hearing was clear: "You need a leveraged offer. You need to stop trading time for money. Build the membership. Scale."

Honestly, she loved the idea. A membership could have been a beautiful thing.

Something else was calling her though.

Being given a recipe to follow before you know what's in the cupboards

Here's the pattern I see constantly. A psychologist reaches the point where they know something needs to shift. They're ready. They're buzzing with ideas. The very first thing the online business world prescribes is a product. Build a membership. Launch a group programme. Create a course.

Before they've reconnected with what brings life to them. Before they've identified their distinctive edge. Before they've designed an offer suite that actually fits them. Before they've found the language to talk about what makes them different.

It's like being handed a recipe before you even know what's in the cupboards.

It doesn't matter whether the prescribed product is a membership, a group programme, or a digital course. The problem is the same: something is being built before the real foundation exists. Not a business plan foundation. A deeper one. What brings life to you? What's your distinctive edge? What does your offer suite look like when it's designed around you, not around a template? That's the work that has to happen first. Everything else grows from it.

Without that you end up creating something lovely, even polished. Not yours though. Not the thing that makes you non-displaceable and driven by aliveness. It's top-down, platform-driven, niche-driven, competing on price when it could be something extraordinary.

If you're caught in that "I should have a leveraged offer by now" loop, come to the 5-day WTF Era Practice Redesign Sprint. You'll leave with a clear distinctive edge, an offer suite, and the language to talk about it. Register here — Free or VIP

What happened when she stopped following the prescription

Here's what happened when this psychologist stopped following the prescribed pathway and started listening deeply to what made her feel alive.

She noticed two things. First: there was a certain kind of her one-to-one work that was still absolutely filling her up. Not all her 1:1 work. A specific kind. The kind that lit her up and left her more resourced, not less.

Second: she had what she'd been calling a "side quest." An art-based creative practice that she was compelled and moved by. Something she loved deeply but had never considered central to her professional identity.

Then she made this very brave and courageous choice.

She protected the 1:1 work that was filling her up. She set aside the membership idea, not because it was wrong, but because she recognised that something else was calling her first. She brought that so-called side quest right into the centre of her practice.

What she had considered a side quest was actually core.

Cruising into deep Blue Ocean strategy territory in her practice

When she moved away from producing something which was lovely into something that was truly courageous, what she started to create was exceptional and extraordinary.

I've worked with a lot of psychologists. I've never seen anything like it, and yet it was completely relatable. That's what makes it so powerful.

This wasn't niche in the way the gurus teach niche. This was deep Blue Ocean strategy territory, uniquely non-displaceable, built from her essence. Impossible to copy because it came from the intersection of her training, her lived experience, her creative practice, and her willingness to trust herself when the popular pathways were pointing somewhere else.

Now her practice is filling her cup. There's been a monumental shift in energy that has unlocked a lot of creativity. New opportunities are emerging organically. Grants. Pathways she couldn't have engineered. The kind of things that happen when you practice from your essence and build your practice around your essence.

This is our Safe Base, Brave Practice methodology in action.

Leaning into the safe base meant bringing what she thought was a side quest right into the centre. It turned out to be the seed from which this beautiful practice is growing. A practice that I believe could become a guide, an inspirational pathway to authenticity for others too. Coming from a deeply creative, deeply authentic place.

That's transformational. That's regenerative. It didn't start with a product. It started with a question: what brings life to me? The distinctive edge, the offer suite, the language... all of that grew from the answer.

Extractive versus regenerative business advice

Most business advice is built for extraction. Psychologists need models built for regeneration.

Regenerative practice design isn't cookie-cutter. It's non-displaceable because it's yours. It doesn't start with "what product should I build?" or "what niche should I pick?" or "how do I compete on price?" It starts with "what brings life to me? To my practice?" From that, the distinctive edge emerges. The offer suite takes shape. The language becomes yours.

It's not top-down. It's not platform-driven or niche-driven. It builds from aliveness outward.

Right-sizing your 1:1 is not failure. Protecting the work that restores you is not playing small. The thing you've been dismissing as a side quest? It might actually be the most strategically important part of your entire practice.

The practice has to be redesigned to meet this era and bring forward a liveable future. That redesign starts with what's alive in you, not with a product template.

You don't need more content to consume. You need structured time to design.
